Himachal Pradesh: Tourist Guide to the Valley of the Gods

Manali sits at the northern end of the Kullu Valley, at about 2,050 m on the banks of the Beas River. Snow-covered peaks, deodar forests and apple orchards surround it. It works for families, honeymooners, backpackers and adventure seekers alike, and it is also the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti. It is roughly 540 km from Delhi, about 310 km from Chandigarh and 50 km from Bhuntar airport. 3 to 5 days is a good amount of time.

The Legend Behind the Name

The name Manali comes from "Manu-Alaya", meaning "the abode of Manu". In Hindu tradition, Manu is the lawgiver and progenitor of humanity who survived a great flood in a boat. Local belief holds that he landed here and settled. The Manu Temple in Old Manali is dedicated to him and is among the few such shrines, which is why the region is called the "Valley of the Gods". The current temple is a simple, old wooden structure, and a short uphill walk from the village.

Main Attractions

Hadimba Devi Temple. Built in 1553, this four-tiered wooden pagoda stands inside a cedar forest known as Dhungri. It is dedicated to Hadimba, wife of Bhima in the Mahabharata, and its walls are decorated with carved animal horns and detailed woodwork. Go early, as queues build up fast. Nearby is the Ghatotkacha Temple, dedicated to her son.

Old Manali. Across the Manalsu stream from the modern town, this is a village of traditional wooden houses, narrow lanes, apple orchards and a lively café scene. It has a relaxed, backpacker feel, with riverside cafés, live music, bakeries and guesthouses. It is the best base for travellers who want atmosphere over convenience.

Vashisht Village and Hot Springs. About 3 to 4 km from town, Vashisht has an old stone temple and public hot-water springs, believed to have healing properties. Bathing areas are often separate for men and women, and the springs can be crowded. Respect local customs.

Mall Road. The town's main market street, good for shawls, Kullu caps, woollens, handicrafts, Tibetan goods, dried fruits and a wide choice of restaurants.

Tibetan Monasteries. The Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa and the nearby Tibetan market make a calm half-day stop.

Jogini Falls and Nehru Kund. Short, scenic walks near Vashisht and on the main highway.

Gateway to the High Himalaya

Solang Valley (about 13 to 14 km). The region's adventure hub. In summer, meadows host paragliding, zorbing and quad biking. In winter, snow turns the valley into a skiing and snow-play area. Facilities include ropeways and adventure parks. Check that operators are licensed and equipment is safe.

Rohtang Pass (about 51 km, 3,978 m). Known for snow views and wide panoramas of the Pir Panjal range. The pass is generally open from late spring to autumn, and it closes during heavy snow. A permit is required for vehicles going to Rohtang Pass, and there is a daily cap, so book ahead through the official Himachal Pradesh channels. Rules and timings change, so check before planning.

Atal Tunnel. At about 9 km, this is one of the world's longest highway tunnels above 3,000 m. It opened in 2020 and links Manali (Solang) with Sissu in Lahaul, cutting travel to the Lahaul valley by several hours and keeping it reachable for much of the year. It can still close in heavy snow or bad weather. Beyond the north portal, you can visit Sissu, with its waterfall and lake, and continue towards Keylong.

Beyond Rohtang. In summer you can also reach Chandratal Lake and Spiti by road or trek, depending on conditions.

Adventure Activities

  • White-water rafting: On the Beas near Kullu and Pirdi, mainly in spring and early summer. Always use certified operators and wear a life jacket.

  • Paragliding: At Solang and the Dobhi area, usually with tandem pilots.

  • Trekking: The Hampta Pass trek (about 4 to 5 days, crossing from Kullu to Lahaul) and Beas Kund (a shorter route to a glacial source) are the best known. Bhrigu Lake is another popular option.

  • Mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding: Available at Solang and Rohtang in season.

  • Camping and river-side stays: Common along the Beas and in nearby villages.

Nearby Day Trips

  • Naggar Castle and Roerich Art Gallery (about 20 km): A heritage castle and the former home of the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich, with valley views

  • Kasol and Parvati Valley: About 75 km, usually 2 to 3 hours by road

  • Great Himalayan National Park and Tirthan Valley: For nature, birdwatching and quiet stays

  • Kullu and Manikaran: Kullu for markets and the Dussehra festival, and Manikaran for hot springs and the gurdwara

Food to Try

  • Siddu: Steamed bread stuffed with poppy seeds or lentils, served with ghee

  • Trout: Fresh from local streams, often grilled

  • Himachali dham: A traditional festive meal

  • Chha gosht and madra: Regional meat and yogurt-based dishes

  • Tibetan food: Momos, thukpa and butter tea

  • Café food: Old Manali has Israeli, Italian and continental options

  • Apples and apple cider: Seasonal and widely sold

Choose busy, clean places, and drink bottled or filtered water.

Best Time to Visit

  • March to June: Pleasant weather (about 10 to 25°C), ideal for sightseeing, adventure sports and Rohtang. This is also the busiest season, so expect traffic and high prices.

  • July to September (monsoon): Heavy rain, landslides and road closures are common. Plan carefully or avoid it.

  • October to November: Clear skies, autumn colours and fewer crowds. A very good time to visit.

  • December to February: Cold, with snow in Manali and heavy snow at Solang and beyond. It's great for snow lovers, but roads can be tricky and Rohtang is closed.

Getting There

  • By air: Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar is about 50 km away, with limited flights. Check current schedules. Chandigarh is a larger alternative.

  • By road: Overnight Volvo and other buses run from Delhi (about 12 to 14 hours) and Chandigarh (about 8 to 9 hours). Driving is scenic but long, and winter driving needs care.

  • By train: The nearest major railhead is Chandigarh. Joginder Nagar, a narrow-gauge station, is closer but has limited connections.

  • Local transport: Taxis (often union-regulated), shared cabs and local buses. Walking works well in Old Manali and Mall Road.
