Tourist guide to a marvel carved by nature postojna cave
Postojna Cave is one of Europe's most visited natural attractions and the longest cave system in Slovenia, at roughly 24 km of passages. It sits in the Karst region of southwestern Slovenia, about 50 km (around 45 minutes by car) from Ljubljana. The cave has been open to visitors for over 200 years, and a few minutes into the visit you're riding an electric train deep underground, which is a big part of its appeal.
The Cave Visit
A standard visit lasts about 90 minutes and has three parts:
Train ride (about 2 km): An open electric train carries you into the cave through tunnels and chambers. It has run in some form since the 19th century.
Guided walk (about 1.5 km): On foot, you pass through large halls with stalactites, stalagmites and columns. Audio guides are available in many languages.
Train back: The same train returns you to the entrance.
Highlights include the Concert Hall, a vast chamber large enough to host concerts, and the Brilliant, a pure white stalagmite that is one of the cave's best-known formations.
Temperature: It's about 10°C inside all year round, so bring a jacket even in summer. Warm clothing is sometimes provided in winter.
Photography: Rules on photos and flash have varied, so check at the entrance.
The Olm (Proteus)
Postojna is home to the olm (Proteus anguinus), a blind, pale, salamander-like cave creature sometimes called the "human fish". It can live for decades and go years without eating. The cave includes a Vivarium (the "Proteus Vivarium") where you can see olms and other cave animals, and learn about the area's underground life. Ticket packages often include the Vivarium.
Predjama Castle (about 9 km away)
Predjama is a Renaissance castle built into the mouth of a cave in a 123 m cliff. It's one of the most striking castles in Europe and is a natural pairing with Postojna. Many people visit both in the same day, and combined tickets are available.
The castle is linked to the story of the knight Erazem of Predjama, a legendary 15th-century figure.
Inside you'll find period rooms, exhibitions and views over the valley.
A cave system lies behind the castle, and guided cave tours are sometimes offered in certain seasons.
Other Things to See Nearby
Škocjan Caves (UNESCO World Heritage Site): About 45 km away, with a huge underground canyon and a very different, more dramatic feel from Postojna.
Planina Cave and Planina Polje: A quieter cave and an area known for the seasonal Lake Cerknica region.
Lake Cerknica: One of Europe's largest intermittent lakes, which appears and disappears with the seasons.
Lipica Stud Farm: The original home of the Lipizzaner horses, about 40 km away.
Piran and the coast: About an hour away by car, making a good extension to your trip.
Karst region villages: Known for stone houses, local prosciutto (pršut) and Teran wine.
Food to Try
The Karst region has its own food traditions:
Pršut: Dry-cured Karst ham, similar to prosciutto
Teran: A bold local red wine from the Karst area
Jota: A hearty bean and sauerkraut soup
Local cheese and honey
Štruklji: Rolled dumplings, sweet or savory
There are restaurants and cafés at the cave complex, and more options in Postojna town.
Getting There
From Ljubljana: About 45 minutes by car on the motorway. Direct buses and trains run frequently (around an hour). The station is in Postojna town, and from there you can walk, take a taxi or use a shuttle to the cave entrance (check current options).
From Ljubljana Airport: About 50 minutes by car.
From Trieste (Italy): About an hour by car.
From Zagreb or Venice: A few hours by road, often via Ljubljana.
Parking: Available at the cave complex, usually for a fee.
Best Time to Visit
The cave is open all year and stays at the same temperature, so any season works.
Summer (June to August): Busiest, so book ahead and arrive early or late in the day.
Spring and autumn: Fewer crowds and pleasant weather for combining with Predjama or hiking.
Winter: Quiet and a good choice for avoiding crowds, though some outdoor attractions may have shorter hours.
Practical Tips
Book online in advance, especially in summer and on weekends. Tickets often have set times.
Dress warmly, in layers, and wear shoes with grip, as the paths can be damp.
Allow enough time: About 2 to 3 hours for the cave and Vivarium, plus another 1 to 2 hours for Predjama.
Accessibility: The train and parts of the route are manageable for many visitors, but there are steps and uneven areas. Contact the park in advance if you have specific mobility needs.
With children: The train, the olm and the large caverns make this a popular family stop.
Prices, opening times and combined tickets change by season, so check the official Postojna Cave website before you go.
