Not sure which day tour from Ljubljana to book? This one-day tour in Slovenia is worth a closer look. Go on a private trip to the Slovenian coast, built around Piran which is one of the country's most photogenic towns, and Moon Bay, a nature reserve most visitors never even hear about.
The day starts with pickup from your Ljubljana hotel. It's about an hour and a half to the coast. A drive in a private car that shifts noticeably as you go. The rolling countryside gives way to glimpses of the Adriatic. This is one of the best day trips from Ljubljana precisely because of that contrast. You leave a landlocked capital and end up somewhere that feels Mediterranean by lunch time.
The first stop is usually Moon Bay, part of the Strunjan Nature Reserve. It's genuinely one of the more unusual spots on the Slovenian coast that other tour packages often miss. It's largely untouched, with dramatic cliffs, salt pans, and clear Adriatic water you can actually swim in. It doesn't get the crowds that Piran does. This is exactly the appeal of Moon Bay. A quiet stretch of coastline before the day gets busier. It's like taking a drive in a private car to one of Slovenia's quiet towns, dodging the usual crowd and chaos of tourists. From there, your day tour in Slovenia continues into Piran itself. It is a compact medieval town with narrow stone streets and a Venetian-style main square, and views out over the water from its old town walls. It's the kind of place that rewards slow walking rather than a checklist. Even a wrong turn down a side street here usually leads somewhere worth photographing anyway. This Piran day tour from Ljubljana also takes in a couple of the coast's other charming towns nearby. Each coast comes with its own character despite sitting just minutes apart.
Food is a real part of this day, not an afterthought. There's time built in to calmly sit down whether for a coffee and cake at a café overlooking the sea, or a full seafood meal at one of the best restaurants in Piran. Given the setting, most travelers end up choosing the seafood.
This is typically a 5-6 hour day, though it can run longer if you'd like more time on the coast. Just let us know in advance and we'll build that into the plan. Since it's a private tour, there's no fixed group pace to keep up with. The day moves at whatever speed suits you.
If you're weighing this against other day tours from Ljubljana has to offer, this one leans toward the coast and quiet nature rather than mountains or lakes. It brings you to a different side of the country entirely, and one that surprises a lot of first-time visitors who assume Slovenia is all about the Alps.

9:30 AM — Moon Bay (Strunjan Nature Reserve)
Spend some time in Moon Bay, a largely unspoiled stretch of coastline. A short walk through the reserve, with time for a swim in the Adriatic if the weather's right.
11:00 AM — Piran Old Town
Continue your day tour in Slovenia with a drive to Piran. Start with Tartini Square, the town's Venetian-style main square. It is named after the composer Giuseppe Tartini. From here, walk up to St. George's Parish Church. Climb the bell tower for panoramic views over Piran's terracotta rooftops and the Adriatic beyond.
12:00 PM — Piran Town Walls & Waterfront
Walk along Piran's medieval town walls, one of the best-preserved defensive structures on the coast. Then head down to the waterfront promenade and explore a few of the small shops and galleries tucked into the old town.
1:00 PM — Coffee, Cake, or Seafood
After spending your morning on the coastal edge of Slovenia, sit down for a fulfilling lunch. Try some local coffee and cake at a café. Even restaurants in Piran serve some of the best seafood meals. Give a try to Buzara which is a classic Adriatic preparation, Brancin (it’s a whole sea bass grilled and sautéed with garlic), and Istrska Mineštra, which is a thick, slow-cooked soup.
2:15 PM — Portorož
If time allows, take a short drive to Portorož. It is Slovenia's most well-known seaside resort town. You will definitely enjoy the contrast between Piran's medieval character and Portorož's more modern, resort-town feel.
