9-Day Austria, Hungary and Slovenia Itinerary from India
Europe does not have to mean the same Paris-Switzerland-Italy circuit. A trip through Austria, Hungary and Slovenia gives you imperial palaces, thermal baths and a fairytale lake in one holiday, usually with smaller crowds and better value than the big-name routes.
This Austria Hungary Slovenia itinerary covers nine days across Vienna, Budapest and Ljubljana, with practical tips on visas, transport and timing for travellers flying from India.
Why choose Austria, Hungary and Slovenia?
Three very different cities. Vienna is elegant and musical, Budapest is lively and dramatic, and Ljubljana is small, green and calm.
Close together. You spend your time exploring, not sitting in transit.
One visa. All three countries are in the Schengen area, so a single Schengen visa covers the trip.
Less crowded. Ljubljana and Lake Bled are far quieter than the most popular Europe stops.
9-day itinerary at a glance
Days | City | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
1–3 | Vienna | Schönbrunn Palace, old town, Belvedere, coffee houses |
4–6 | Budapest | Parliament building, Danube views, Buda Castle area, thermal bath |
7–9 | Ljubljana | Old town, castle, riverside, Lake Bled day trip |
Days 1–3: Vienna
Arrive in Vienna and keep the first day light. Walk through the old town, see St. Stephen's Cathedral and settle into a traditional coffee house.
Spend day two at Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, then visit the Belvedere in the afternoon. On day three, choose between museums, a classical music evening or a relaxed stroll along the Ringstrasse. Leave some time unplanned, because Vienna rewards slow wandering.
Days 4–6: Budapest
Travel from Vienna to Budapest on day four. The train journey takes roughly two and a half to three hours, which makes it an easy half-day transfer.
On day five, see the Hungarian Parliament, cross the Chain Bridge and explore the Buda Castle district. Finish with a Danube walk at sunset.
Day six is for a thermal bath, one of the most memorable things to do in Budapest. Follow it with a relaxed dinner and a visit to the old Jewish quarter.
Days 7–9: Ljubljana and Lake Bled
The transfer from Budapest to Ljubljana is the longest of the trip, usually five to six hours by road, so many travellers use day seven mainly for travel and an evening in the old town.
On day eight, take a day trip to Lake Bled, about an hour from Ljubljana. Walk around the lake, visit the island church and try the local cream cake. If time allows, add Postojna Cave on the way back.
Use day nine for a final walk along the Ljubljanica river, the Dragon Bridge and the central market before departure. For a closer look at the city, read our 48-hour Ljubljana city guide.
Visa for Indian travellers
Austria, Hungary and Slovenia all issue the Schengen visa. For a multi-country trip, apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If your stays are equal, apply to the country you enter first.
Keep your flight bookings, hotel reservations, travel insurance, bank statements and a clear day-wise itinerary ready. Requirements and fees can change, so always confirm them on the official embassy or VFS website before applying.
Best time to visit
May to September: the best weather, long days and the best conditions for Lake Bled.
December: Christmas markets in all three countries, but expect cold weather.
Peak summer: busy in Vienna and Budapest, so book hotels and popular attractions early.

Frequently asked questions
How many days are enough for Austria, Hungary and Slovenia?

Do I need separate visas for each country?
No. One Schengen visa covers all three, as long as you apply through the correct country.
Which currency should I carry?
Austria and Slovenia use the euro. Hungary uses the Hungarian forint, so carry a card that works internationally and a little local cash.
Is this trip suitable for families and seniors?
Yes. The cities are easy to walk, public transport is reliable and the pace can be kept relaxed. Plan one slow day in each city.
What is the best month for this trip?
May to September for weather, or December for Christmas markets.
